Holiday Marketing Starts Now: A Small Business Checklist for the Season

The holiday season is the busiest time of year for many small businesses — and the easiest time to fall behind on marketing, because you're too busy serving customers to plan. The owners who do best get the groundwork done now, before the rush. Here's a checklist to work through this week.

1. Update your holiday hours everywhere

Set special hours on your Google Business Profile, your website and any directories you're listed on. Wrong hours during the holidays turn into frustrated customers and bad reviews. AI assistants that answer "is it open on Christmas Eve?" read these too.

2. Decide on one clear offer

Not five. One. A gift bundle, a holiday menu, a package for corporate clients, a service that makes a great gift. Make it easy to understand and easy to buy. Clarity sells better than discounts.

3. Make gift cards easy to find

Gift cards are one of the most reliable holiday sellers for local businesses — and they bring a new customer through the door in January. Put a "Buy a gift card" link on your homepage, in your email footer and on your social profiles.

4. Plan three emails, now

  • Early: announce your holiday offer and hours.
  • Mid-season: a gift guide or reminder, with deadlines for orders or bookings.
  • Last-minute: for the procrastinators — gift cards and what's still available.

Write them before you're busy. A drafted email you can send in thirty seconds is one you'll actually send.

5. Reach out to businesses, not just people

Many companies buy client and employee gifts, book team events and order catering this time of year. A short, friendly note to local offices and past corporate customers can bring larger orders than any social post.

6. Plan the January follow-up

This is the step most owners forget. Every holiday customer is someone you can invite back in the slow weeks of January. Collect contact details with permission, then plan a "thanks for a great season" email with a reason to return.

Start small, start today

You don't need to do every item. Pick the two that matter most for your business and get them done this week. The holidays reward the businesses that are ready before customers start looking.
